(Download flyer for this event here)
The Saturday session “Interculturality and Urban Innovation”, organized by the research unit ICON and the NGO Global City Aarhus, traces out some of the concrete trajectories of the conference and the Global City festival for urban life and the development of a new urbanity. This theme is relevant at present in Århus, as Cultural Diversity and Urban Innovation are seen as central elements in the city’s attempt to become European Cultural Capital in 2017. At the same time cultural diversity and interculturality are also central issues in the development of urban life worldwide. This session will give the opportunity for some of the participants from the academic conference and the citizens of the city of Århus, and the region of Midtjylland to meet, and discuss their vision for urban life in the future. The session will therefore be in English
The event will start with presentations of the activities of UC2008 and Global City Festival in relation to the theme of Urban Innovation. After this will the photographer Jacob Holt (Denmark/USA), well known for his “American Pictures” and who has agreed to let his newest show/exhibition “The Ghetto in our Minds” be a part of the Global City Festival, present his work on racism, racial discrimination, oppression, poverty, slavery and social injustice. “The Ghetto in my Heart” exhibition will be present from the August 19-31 in Globus 1 in Gellerup, a suburb of Aarhus.
Then journalist and writer Fred Setterberg (USA) will present his and photographer Lonny Shavelsson’s work, “Under the Dragon”, which is a vibrant presentation of the transformations and intermingling of California’s different cultures in San Francisco Bay Area. The presentation will highlight the constructive and deconstructive tensions and conflicts between cultures lost in recollection and new emerging cultures by taking the Bay area as an example of how things might develop in the future. The images from Under the Dragon will be presented in form of a Dias show, which will run during the conference both in the conference area and at the Global City Square at the State Library.
After this Trevor Davies will give a presentation which introduce the concept of a Capital of Culture and present his vision of the city as a meeting place for diversity and hybridity, based on connections among cities worldwide. Trevor Davies is former director for the Aarhus Festival week, former director of the Copenhagen European Capital of Culture (1996) and has recently been appointed to director of the Aarhus initiative for European Capital of Culture in 2017. He is also very involved the new 10 year program Metropolis, which will link artists in a number of major world cities on the theme on urbanity and the city, looking at the interface of arts and architecture in the context of the city. Cities to be involved in the project include among others Marseilles, Istanbul, New York, London, Beirut and Berlin.
There will be plenty of opportunity to debate these issues during the session and hopefully the event will be of inspiration for both the citizens of Aarhus as well as for the international participants regarding how we can imagine the development of “the city” in the 21st century.
The event has free entrance for the participants of the UC2008, Servas hosts involved in the conference and members of Global Citizens but otherwise it costs 60 Danish kroner to participate, which will be paid on site. The event will be held in one of the smaller Lakeside Auditoriums (“Søauditorierne”), and it might therefore be a good idea to reserve a seat, which can be done by sending a message with name and address to icaui@yahoo.dk and to meet on site 9.20 and confirm the reservation.
